On March 22, 2018, the Marine Institute (MI) held its most recent Shave for the Brave, bringing the four-year running total to over $3,000! The student union even got involved with a soup and chili sale, donating proceeds to the school’s total.
Veteran Shavers Bradley and Samantha were back for their second Shaves for the Brave. Bradley shaved his head at MI two years ago while Samantha donated her hair and shaved three years ago at the Avalon Mall.
The event kicked off with a chat about Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC) from our executive director, Geoff Eaton, and MI student and young adult cancer survivor, Katie. Katie was diagnosed in May 2017, putting her studies and life on hold. She had to move back home to Ontario with her parents during treatment, but is back and rocking it out in school. Katie connected with YACC after seeing Shave for the Brave posters on campus. It was really cool to have her there to tell the audience about the impact of YACC’s programs which are made possible through fundraising events like Shave for the Brave. YACC has helped her feel less alone through getting to hang out with other young adults who know what she’s dealing with as she adjusts to life after cancer.
We want to say a special thank you to Christian Samson, Matt Downton, and the rest of the student union for supporting YACC, and to Kristen Thistle from Sound Salon and Spa for doing such an amazing job on the new haircuts for Brad and Samantha.
