Sean Kilpatrick’s impact has been felt at many of our Shaves. As a representative of Public Service Credit Union (PSCU) his colleagues have been presenting eligible Head Hunters with their $500 PSCU head start cheque. Recipients have included Nalcor, St. John’s Firefighters, and Newfoundland Liquor Corporation! Soon he will be receiving his own.
Kilpatrick first heard about the Shave through his son several years ago but he was inspired to Shave last year at a Newfoundland Labrador Housing Shave for the Brave.
“That Shave involved three of my then co-workers (I have since retired), all female. It created quite a buzz and energy in our workplace. Society places great weight and expectations on people, especially women, regarding their appearance. Hairstyle is a major part of those expectations. Seeing them so willingly go bald was inspirational,” said Kilpatrick.
Kilpatrick is also a strong believer in leading by example. As a PSCU board member he felt it was important to go above and beyond writing a cheque by Shaving himself. Since his decision other PSCU leaders have followed suit.
“I felt that the best way to demonstrate the Board’s support was to have a Board member be the first person shaved. Since then, PSCU’s manager of finance, Ian Barrett, has also come forward. The PSCU has also agreed to give five offices a head start in their event by donating $500 to their Shaves for the Brave,” Kilpatrick said.
Kilpatrick is excited to face the razor.
“It is such a one of a kind event because it allows people who do not have cancer to share an experience that a large number of cancer patients have to endure—the loss of their hair. I think that this creates a unique bond between cancer patients and those who support them. Also, the prerequisites are pretty basic—all you need is a head with hair on it!” said Kilpatrick.
