The 14th St. John’s Community Shave

Kendra Newman was calm and collected as she waited patiently for her number to be called. Little Kendra was one of the many registered participants at the 14th Annual St. John’s Community Shave for the Brave on Saturday, March 30. OZFM’s Stephanie O’Brien, who emceed the event, chatted with Kendra just before her powerful haircut to ask if she was nervous.

Kendra said, “It’s just hair. I don’t want to make a big deal out of it.”

Stephanie, like many women in the Avalon Mall that day, was blown away by Kendra’s insight and attitude, as well as her giving heart. She smiled throughout her entire haircut and wore her bright, yellow toque proudly on her freshly-shaved head.

Kendra was joined by 63 other people, cutting their hair, shaving their heads, and raising money for Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC). Some were shaving for the very first time, and some — like Barb Stansbury — were not strangers to the Shave. She was first in line to experience her 14th Shave for the Brave! We have a feeling this won’t be Kendra’s last time shaving, thanks to the amazing example of veteran Shavers, just like Barb.

It may just be hair, but the fundraising efforts of these 64 Shavers brought in $31,761 for young adults living with, through, and beyond cancer — and that’s a very big deal!

Huge thanks to OZFM’s Stephanie O’Brien, the Avalon Mall, Canadian AV and everyone who made the 14th Annual St. John’s Community Shave for the Brave a huge success!
